Elephant9 - Arrival Of The New Elders (Rune Grammofon)

After the excellence of 2019’s 'Psychedelic Backfile' releases, a new album from Norwegian jazz-rockers Elephant9 was always going to be a treat. While the 2019 albums were master-classes in lengthy fusion workouts, the new album sounds more thoughtful, with nothing over 7-minutes in length, but the stellar musicianship still shines through on this collection of top of the range jazz-rock fusion instrumentals.

Elephant9 – Psychedelic Backfire Volumes I & II (Rune Grammafon)

I loved the cool jazz/fusion of Elephant9’s ‘Greatest Show On Earth’ album, but was a bit apprehensive when the Norwegian trio offered up two live albums to follow it. I needn’t have worried, though, as these two records are astonishing stuff. Recorded during a four-day residency at Kampen Bistro in Oslo, with former member Reine Fiske asked along to help out, the result is ten extended slabs of superb jazz/fusion.
