In 1985 I bought an album of superb Aussie jazz/ fusion by The Benders, and later a solo release by the leader/pianist Chris Abrahams, but didn’t realise that he then formed The Necks in 1987, and released 25 more records of experimental jazz. Still a trio, but utilising half a dozen instruments between them, this might not appeal to everyone, but the 21-minute ‘Bloom' captivated me as soon as I heard it.
